When we carried out afforestation work in Umnugovi Aimag and Lun Soum, we dug the planting holes a year in advance. Over time, wind naturally deposits fertile soil into the holes, along with bits of plant residue. This pro cess enriches the soil, making it more suitable for planting. There is a common belief that because soil moisture evap orates, it is better to plant a tree immediately after digging the hole. But this is not the case. Regardless of how dry the soil may be, thorough watering during planting and consistent watering afterwards will prevent the soil from drying out. Our experiments confirmed that if you want to improve soil quality, preparing the holes the year before produces significantly better results.
